American Psychological Association (APA)

Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada

  • AUCC Home Page

  • Search Academic Programs in Canada
Click on 'Database Search' and define your search (e.g., by key word, program, degree level, school, etc.) The 'field of study' section on the search website is very useful for generating ideas!

    • Note re Distance Education (on-line learning) beyond the Bachelor's degree level:
To our knowledge, opportunities for distance education/on-line learning in Psychology beyond the bachelor's level is very limited. The above search engine is very useful for identifying programs at the Bachelor's Master's, and PhD level in various disciplines. Unfortunately if you want to find distance ed/on-line programs, you will have to dig for that information on the websites for individual schools (if you find an easier way, contact Heather Smith). Examples of such programs:

      • University of Calgary offers a Masters of Counselling as well as Masters of Education in School and Applied Child Psychology.

      • Yorkville University in Fredericton New Brunswick was granted approval by the New Brunswick Dept. of Education to offer a Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology effective 2004. This program is an 'on-line/blended degree' and is sponsored by the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, Department of Psychology.

Warning -strongly recommend that you choose an 'accredited' program. See the sections on this website for the Canadian Psychology Association and the American Psychological Association for details.

Other Miscellaneous 'Tips' When Searching for Graduate Programs

  • A psychometrist (also referred to as a psychometrician) is a specialist in the theory, creation, and administration of psychological tests such as intelligence tests, personality tests, and aptitude tests. For those interested in such a career, search for such training in psychology departments that offer graduate level training in counselling psychology, quantitative/measurement psychology, or school psychology.

  • Programs of interest to Psychology students that might be overlooked (e.g., if not housed in a Psychology Department or are missed on typical key word searches):
    Examples:

    • Counselling Psychology programs within Masters of Education Programs (e.g., at Simon Fraser University and at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto)

    • For those looking for PsyD programs (Doctor of Psychology) in Canada instead of PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) or MA programs in Psychology , CPA reported (2007) that there are two PsyD programs in Canada (Univ of Quebec and the Univ of Laval). Both schools are in Quebec and both are French speaking.
    • programs offered in the area of Health. For example, the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto offers "Social and Behavioural Health Science". That website says "Researchers and practitioners......seek to understand public health issues and contribute to the development of interventions which address the broad Social Determinants of Health as well as the health behaviours of individuals and populations."

    • Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) at the University of Manitoba - the U of M website says "Students have the opportunity to receive supervised training in the practice of ABA with varied clientele, and especially with persons with developmental disabilities and/or autism."

  • Forensic Psychology
    • There might be faculty members at the following Canadian universities who have or did have interests in forensic psychology and can provide you leads for relevant graduate programs: Univ of British Columbia, Dalhousie Univ, Queen's Univ, Univ of Saskatchewan, and Simon Fraser Univ.

    • also look for related graduate programs in Criminology (housed in Sociology Depts) or Forensic Science. When you use search engines (see sections above) to find schools, do separate searches for key words 'criminology' and 'forensic'. Chris Burris, John Rempel, Fred Desroches (all 3 at St. Jeromes), and Barry McClinchey (Sociology Dept) might be able to give you more leads.

    • for schools in the United States:
      • the graduate school listing for the American Psychological Association lists a few relevant graduate programs in the United States. See above for details about this book.
      • Psychology Schools and Degrees - see sidebar on that website for Forensic Psych

    • Canadian Society of Forensic Science
