STUDIES BEYOND THE BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY

Psychology Majors are interested in a wide variety of careers many of which require studies beyond the Bachelor's degree. This website provides numerous examples of college and university programs that will be of interest to Psychology Majors:



College Programs in Ontario of Interest to Psych Majors

Many students with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology (General or Honours) further their education at the college level in order to obtain applied skills for a particular career path.

If you are unsure that you will have the necessary background to apply for admission to a particular college level program (e.g., the Major for your Bachelor's degree is different than the one listed in the advertised prerequisites but you have taken the necessary course prerequisites), contact the host school directly to discuss your background in relation to those course requirements.

Searching Ontario Colleges for Suitable Programs:

Search by School:

  • go to the Ontario Colleges website and see the list of college names sorted by region.
  • click on the individual school name that you are interested in to identify programs offered at the particular school.
  • once you have found a program/school of interest, go to the actual website for that school for specific details.

Search by Program:

  • Details are similar to those for "Tips for finding the Fast Track College Programs...' below.

Tips for Finding the 'Fast Track' College Programs for Those with Bachelor's Degrees:

  1. go to the Ontario Colleges website

  2. click on 'Find' then click on 'Advanced Search' in the middle of the page

  3. conduct searches using each of the following search categories (see the left sidebar on the website) separately to maximize search results:
    1. Program Length = one year or less
      (Heather recommends starting with Program Length)
    2. Program Level = Post-Diploma
    3. Program Type = Accelerated
    4. Credential = Advanced Diploma OR Graduate Certificate

  4. If you want to refine the search further after selecting a category listed in #3, 'Enter a Keyword' e.g., choose from the following (Heather tested these):
    addictions, admin, advertising, autism, behavioural, business, career, communicative disorders, corporate communication, design, early childhood, health, human resources, information technology, management, marketing, police, public relations, social services, etc.

    Alternatively leave the keyword field blank and you can explore all of the search results presented using the parameters listed in item 3.

  5. click on 'Search'

  6. near the heading 'Your Search Results', choose 'College Name' or 'Program Title' under 'Sort Results By'.

  7. Remember to 'clear your search' between searches or the search results won't be complete.

  • Volunteer and/or paid work experience in a helping/mentoring/coaching role(s) over an extended period of time (not just a few months!) is typically a prerequisite for admission to Faculties of Education. See FAQ 15 for further advice.

    Students whose Major for the Bachelor's level degree is Psychology will be restricted in the number of MSW programs that they can apply to because the majority of MSW programs are looking for (according to their websites) candidates who hold a Bachelor of Social Work degree. Suggest that Psychology Majors who are searching for information on MSW programs in Ontario begin their search with Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Toronto, and Renison University College*. Also, consider applying to the Honours Social Work program at Renison University College during your final year of the Psychology degree. See the next bullet for details.
