RESEARCH APPRENTICESHIP COURSES

 

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Students who are planning to apply for admission to graduate programs in psychology are strongly encouraged to enrol in one of Psych 264 or 464. These courses provides valuable opportunities for networking, further developing one's research skills, and assessing one's educational and career choices.

Paid or unpaid co-op placements are not acceptable for credit in these course and they will not count towards the 'Advanced Psychology Course' requirements.

The distinction between Psych 264 and 464:

  • Psych 264 (Research Apprenticeship):
    This course involves an unpaid apprenticeship of no more than eight hours per week for 13 weeks in a faculty research program. Students will be assigned duties (see Psych 464 for examples) that will introduce them to the research process. It is the student's responsibility to find a research supervisor. It is expected that the students' workload will be equal to or greater than that of most regular courses.
    Prereq: Psych 291; Honours Psychology or Make-Up Psychology students.
    Antireq: Psych 464.

  • Psych 464 (Advanced Research Apprenticeship):
    This course involves an unpaid apprenticeship of no more than eight hours per week for 13 weeks in a faculty research program. Students will be assigned duties that will enable them to advance their understanding of the research process. Examples of duties include: participating in the design of an experiment and obtaining ethics approval; scheduling, testing, and debriefing research participants; data entry on the computer; and preliminary data analysis. It is the student's responsibility to find a research supervisor. It is expected that the students' workload will be equal to or greater than that of most regular courses.
    Prereq: Psych 291, 292, and 391; one of Psych 392-399, 483, 484; plus enrolment in Honours Psychology or Make-Up Psychology.
    Antireq: Psych 264

GRADING BASIS

Psych 264 and 464 are offered on a credit/no credit basis (i.e., grades will be CR or NCR). These grades have no impact on the average calculations for the degree.

Caution Regarding Residency Requirements:
If you already have internal transfer credits from UW (e.g., following a change in Home Faculty or following a failed standing) or external transfer credits from other institutions, please read carefully the information in the Psychology Undergraduate Student Handbook regarding the 'residency requirements' for the degree before applying to take any courses offered on a CR/NCR grading basis.

COURSE APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. It is the student's responsibility to find an appropriate course supervisor. See the list of faculty members on the Psychology Department website. The list can be sorted by 'Name' or 'Areas of Study'.
  2. The student and the supervisor must agree on the course number for the Directed Studies course, complete the course application/proposal form (see below).
  3. Submit the course application/proposal form to the Psychology Undergradaute Office (PAS 4005/4006) for approval as soon as possible but no later than the the eighth day of classes for the appropriate term.
  4. The student should keep a copy of the course description as well as the course application/proposal form for his/her records.

APPLICATION DECISION AND COURSE ENROLMENT

Your request for enrolment in a Research Apprenticeship course will be reviewed by the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in Psychology (Colin Ellard). This step must be completed by the tenth day of classes.

The Psychology Undergraduate Advisor (Heather Smith) will do the following if the course application/proposal is approved:

  • The Registrar's Office will be notified to add the course (Psych 264 or 464) to your schedule. You, your course supervisor, and the Departmental Ethics Review Committee Officer (Marg Ingleton) will receive a copy of that message.
  • A copy of the approved application form will be sent to your course supervisor.

If the course application has been denied, you and the proposed course supervisor will be notified.

That is, the student cannot increase the credit received for the Honours Thesis (1.5 units) by doing some of the required work under the rubric of an Apprenticeship Course.
