Academic Plans

The University of Waterloo does not offer a degree program in Human Resources Management. We do offer a Minor, Option, and Specializations for current Waterloo students, and a Diploma for post- and non-degree students.
Plan Requirements - which Calendar to follow

Students are normally governed by the regulations current for their academic plan at the time they commence studies in that plan. When degree requirements change, a student may continue to be governed by those regulations or can elect to be governed by the new set of regulations, unless the Faculty specifies otherwise when the change is introduced (see the Undergraduate Calendar).

Students admitted to an HRM Plan effective Fall 2011, Winter 2012, or Spring 2012 follow the HRM requirements in the 2011/2012 Undergraduate Calendar (e.g., the '2011 requirements' above).

Students admitted to an HRM Plan effective Fall 2008 through Spring 2011 follow the HRM requirements in the 2008/2009 Undergraduate Calendar (e.g., the '2008 requirements' above).

Students admitted to an HRM Plan effective Fall 2004 through Spring 2008 follow the HRM requirements in the 2004/2005 Undergraduate Calendar (e.g., the '2004 requirements' above).

Any exceptions to the above must be approved in writing by the HRM Academic Advisor.

Notes for the HRM plans
  • Students in Honours Math/Bus Admin with the HRM Option, or in Honours Bachelor of Math (Honours CS), or in Honours Bachelor of CS with the Business Option are precluded from taking Human Resources Management plans.

  • Current UW students require permission to take courses at other universities
    • Wilfrid Laurier*
      • WLU on-campus BUS courses (e.g., BUS 111, 414, 448, 464) These courses are available for self-enrolment on Quest. If you have the prerequisites but are not able to self-enrol, contact Peter Brillinger (the UW designate for the WLU SBE) for assistance.
      • WLU courses other than on-campus BUS sections complete a Cross-Registration Form.

*Warning: WLU will not permit access to any BUS course to any student without the proper prerequisites. Information regarding pre-requisites for WLU courses for UW students can be found in the Wilfrid Laurier on-line undergrad calendar. Pay close attention to the prerequisite chain early enough in your program that you can complete them on time.

    • Universities other than Wilfrid Laurier - complete a Letter of Permission form

Read carefully the information regarding Letter of Permission and WLU Cross-Registration in the Undergraduate Calendar.

Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation

The Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation, awarded by the Human Resources Professional Association (HRPA), is the only legislated certification for Human Resources Professionals in North America. Those who achieve the designation meet high levels of expertise and competency in all areas of human resources management. See the HRPA website for further details.

HRPA's certification process has five components:

  1. A membership requirement
  2. A coursework requirement*
  3. An exam requirement
  4. A degree requirement
  5. An experience requirement

*Upon successful completion of the nine required courses, students are eligible to write the National Knowledge Exam. HRPA requires an average of 70% in the nine required courses with no individual course achieving lower than 65%. Each course expires ten years after completion.
