Information for Prospective Clinical Students

Below is some information that we think prospective Clinical Psychology students will find helpful in making an informed decision about our program.

Please take a look at our Guidebook to Training in Clinical Psychology to find out information about program objectives, advisement, curriculum, evaluation, research requirements, clinical skill training and more.

Some quick facts about our Clinical program:

  • The mean time to completion for the Clinical Doctoral Program for all of our graduates over the past 7 years is 6.5 years and the median is 6 years. These numbers have been calculated after dropping 4 outliers, 2 of which were high (16, 17 years) and 2 of which were low (4 years). The 2 high outliers involved substantial leaves of absence.

Statistics for the last seven years:
Less than 5 years to complete program: 11% or 2 graduate students
5 years to complete program: 28% or 5 graduate student
6 years to complete program: 33% or 6 graduate students
7 years to complete program: 17% or 3 graduate students
8 years to complete program: 0% or 0 graduate students
More than 8 years (outliers) to complete program: 11% or 2 graduate students

Nearly 80% of all Clinical Psychology students graduate in 5 to 7 years.

  • Licensure in Clinical Psychology is the number of graduated students over the last ten years (2001-2009, not counting the last 2 years) who have become licensed psychologists:

23 out of 24 of our graduates are licensed = 96%
  • The Clinical Psychology program at the University of Waterloo receives approximately 130 applications each year from which we try to select the best 4-6 applicants. In selecting students, we examine the applicant’s undergraduate grades and program of study, his or her GRE scores, the opinions of the reference letter writers, the personal statement of the applicant, as well as any other relevant information (such as publications, presentations, or clinical experience) that is available in the application. Although there are no absolute minimum standards, we anticipate that successful applicants will have undergraduate averages over 80%, GREs above the average (500), and may also have other exceptional aspects to their application.
