2-year MASc Program in Industrial/Organizational Psychology

Master of Applied Science - Industrial/Organizational Psychology

Degree Requirements

One of the Psychology Department's programs of study in Industrial/Organizational study leads to the degree of Master of Applied Science (MASc). Graduates are prepared for careers in various capacities related to Human Resource Management (HRM), including organizational consulting, organizational and policy research, training, and design of systems for personnel selection, job classification, performance evaluation, and other HRM concerns. Moreover, as the MASc program prepares the student for doctoral studies, many graduates have pursued advanced studies at the doctoral level.

Program

The program provides students with training in Quantitative Skills (measurement, statistics, and research design), Applied Skills (e.g., consulting; training), and in I/O Content (personnel selection, leadership, employee motivation, organizational culture management, etc.). In addition, students must complete a Research Paper as well as an internship or field placement. The internship usually is completed by working full-time for four continuous months, although other arrangements sometimes are made (such as working part-time for eight months). Internship placements have occurred with major private corporations (e.g., Bell Canada), crown corporations (Export Development Canada), consulting firms (Hay; ClearPicture), and government agencies.

Course Requirements

Students are required to complete a minimum of 8 one-term (0.5 unit) courses including the master's research paper (which counts as 1.0 unit), four of which must be taken for letter grades, plus a four-month MASc internship. [Note: These are minimum requirements only. Students may be required to take more courses in order to meet the prerequisites for some courses. Completion of the degree is expected to take approximately six terms.] The minimum requirements are listed below:
