Application deadline for programs in Clinical and Social Psychology is December 15th.
All other Psychology programs have a deadline of January 15th.
Before beginning your online application, it is advisable that you review what this process will entail as outlined below and at www.grad.uwaterloo.ca/students/applyingonline.asp.
Applying to Waterloo is a two step process:
1. First you will complete your on-line application.
Note that this process begins with the creation of an account on the OUAC (Ontario Universities’ Application Centre) confidential/secure site via the UW site at the link above. This is done immediately. Once you have completed and submitted your application, the University will set up your account on Waterloo’s self-service application system, Applicant QUEST. This generally takes 2-3 days to occur. The University will email you within a few days of creating your account with instructions and login information for using Quest. You will be unable to submit any documents until this time. So do not leave this step until the deadline date.
2. Second, you will upload your application materials using Applicant Quest (Waterloo's self-service application system).
Applicants must have the materials and information listed below submitted on QUEST by the deadline date of the program to which they are applying:
- Supplementary Information Form
- Personal Statement (separate pdf required as part of Supplemental Information Form)
- GRE Test Scores
- Names and contact information (email address is required) for 3 referees
Once you have submitted your OUAC application, your referees will receive an email informing them how to complete a reference for you. They will have 14 days to submit their reference on your behalf. Thus we will expect their references to arrive up to 14 days past the deadline for the program. We realize that you have no control over when your referees submit their references, but we do ask that you monitor that they have submitted the reference on your behalf within these 14 days and expect you to contact them or us if this is not the case. Note that all reference letters are to be submitted in this manner, electronically via the OUAC application (not by mail correspondence).
On the 'My Materials' page on Quest, you will see a listing of the above 5 items that you will need to submit to apply to the program(s) you specified on your on-line application.
Supplementary Information Form
For Psychology, the Supplementary Information Form on Quest is completed in lieu of a Statement of Intent or any other materials.
To assist you in preparing your answers to be submitted on Quest, here are the questions that you must complete.
The department is organized into areas of specialization, and acceptance into the Graduate Program is into one of these areas:
Cognitive Neuroscience (CN)
Developmental Communication Science (DCS)
Students in Psychology are generally admitted to our PhD programs on the assumption that they intend to pursue a Doctoral (PhD) degree and not a Master’s degree (MA). Thus we expect applicants to indicate that they are seeking admission to the PhD program as we admit directly to PhD from undergraduate studies. Occasionally, students have completed an MA along the way, but this is not the norm in our department. If a student is seeking to study only at the Master’s level, he/she should consider applying to our MASc program.
In order to ensure that your application is reviewed by appropriate faculty members, please indicate your preferred degree program (PhD or MASc) and area of specialization below, along with any specific topics of interest (maximum 100 characters). You may also check a second area if you wish, but applicants should note that if they list the Clinical PhD program as their second choice, they are unlikely to receive consideration for that program.
Letter - Personal Statement
Describe your goals for graduate study and a professional career. If you have specific interests in your proposed field of study or are interested in working with particular faculty members, describe those interests. Also describe any relevant research experience and what you have learned from it, previous academic work in your proposed field of study, and other educational and life experiences that you feel are important and relevant.
At the end, please include a list of scholarships, prizes, honours, or other recognitions you’ve earned. Provide the title(s) of any publication(s), major paper(s), or thesis of which you are an author or co-author (if published, give citation).
This Personal Statement (max. 2000 words) is to be uploaded as a single pdf under the Letter Item in the Materials List. Students should restrict this uploaded information to the Personal Statement as described above, and not include other documents such as samples of their writing or information that is asked for in other sections of this supplemental application (e.g., Funding Applied For; Psychology Course grades). Once you have uploaded the Letter – Personal Statement, indicate here the date you uploaded your document.
Funding Applied For
Please list all sources of scholarship funding for which you have applied for the coming year (e.g., NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC, OGS).
Please list ALL Psychology courses, completed or in progress, including course number, title, weight, instructor and grade.
Note: If you don't have an answer for any of the above questions, do not leave it blank, but put N/A after the question. This will avoid any confusion when the admission committee looks at the form.
Graduate Record Exam Results
Make arrangements to have your Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general scores sent to the Department of Psychology. (Psychology subject scores are no longer required.) The Institution Code for the University of Waterloo is 0996. The Deparment Code (Psychology) is 2016. When you are completing your OUAC form, if you do not have your GRE scores, you can leave this section blank and submit your OUAC application without the scores. You will still be required to have written the GRE General exam, but we are aware that you may not have your results by the time that you submit your application. It is still your responsibility to ensure that your official scores are sent to the Department.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score is required of any applicant who has not completed three or more years of post-secondary study at a Canadian institution, or at an institution where English was the language of instruction. The Institution Code for the University of Waterloo is 0996. The Deparment Code (Psychology) is 08.
Applications received after the application deadlines will be considered if further graduate appointments are available.
NOTE: Because the number of applicants always far exceeds the number of available spots, meeting the requirements does not always guarantee admission.
