CONVOCATION NEWS - GENERAL INFORMATION

For each year from 1995-2010 (details for 2011 pending), more students graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology than a Bachelor's degree in any other Major in the Faculty of Arts (e.g., Accounting, Economics, English, Social Development Studies, etc.).

Arts Grad Class Challenge 2011

PSYCHOLOGY CONVOCATION LUNCHEON (BA and BSc)

The Psychology Convocation Luncheon will be held in the PAS Lounge (PAS 3005) and patio area on Thursday June 16, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. Thesis award presentations will be made during the luncheon at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Those graduating (BA Psych and BSc Psych) will be sent an invitation to the luncheon for themselves and the guests that they will be taking to the convocation ceremony. Please submit RSVPs to Louise Porter (L2porter@uwaterloo.ca) by Thurs June 9.

2011 DEPARTMENTAL AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN HONOURS BA PSYCHOLOGY

On an annual basis, each department in the Faculty of Arts selects the top graduating student from their Honours Bachelor of Arts program to be the recipient of the Departmental Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement.  The Awards are presented at the June convocation. Those graduating in June as well as the previous October convocation are considered for the award.

The Psychology Department is thrilled to announce that Jeffrey Hughes is the 2011 recipient of the Departmental Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement in Honours BA Psychology.

 

Jeffrey Hughes

Jeff completed his Honours Thesis (Getting Justice or Getting Even: How Belief in Ultimate Justice Predicts Attitudes Toward Revenge) under the supervision of Dr. Michael Ross.

During third year Jeff received a Psychology Memorial Award in memory of Dr. Phillip Bryden for outstanding academic achievement. In fourth year he received the Currie Scholarship (another departmental award) for outstanding academic achievement.

Jeff will be receiving an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Arts and Business Co-op at the June 2011 convocation ceremony and will begin graduate studies in Social Psychology at the University of Waterloo September 2011.

Congratulations Jeff on your outstanding academic achievement and best wishes for success in graduate school!

Regarding the convocation ceremony:
A list of all of the Departmental Award winners for the Faculty of Arts will be in the convocation program. Those receiving Departmental Awards will walk across the stage by themselves rather than in groups of 3. Award recognition will be announced along with the name of the individuals as they walk across the stage.

2011 DEPARTMENTAL AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN HONOURS BSc PSYCHOLOGY

The Psychology Department is also pleased to announced that Dylan Thompson will be receiving the Departmental Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement in Honours BSc Psychology. This is not an annual award and Dylan is only the third recipient.

During the past two years Dylan received Psychology Memorial Awards for academic achievement in memory of Dr. Phillip Bryden and Dr. Richard Walters.

Dylan completed his Honours Thesis (Element Organization and its Effects on Restoration, in the Context of Virtual Garden Environments) under the supervision of Dr. Colin Ellard.

He will be receiving an Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology Co-op with a Biology Minor at the June 2011 convocation ceremony and will begin medical school at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine September 2011.

Congratulations Dylan on your outstanding academic achievement at uWaterloo and best wishes for success at medical school!

(This award is not mentioned in the convocation program or announced at the convocation ceremony for the Faculty of Science.)

HONOURS THESIS AWARDS 2011

Approximately 40% of those who graduated with Honours Psych degees this past year (including Oct 2010 and June 2011 convocation) completed an Honours Thesis (Psych 499A/B/C).

Once a year, the Psychology Department recognizes the achievements of a small number of students who have produced the most outstanding Honours Theses over the past year (i.e., Spring/Fall/Winter).

Message from the Psych 499 Course Coordinators (Dr. Erik Woody & Dr. Dan Smilek):

"Congratulations to all our students who completed an honours thesis! Overall, the theses this year were of impressively high quality. We applaud all the hard work and dedication that went into such a high level of achievement!  To recognize particularly outstanding theses, we were able to give eight Honours Thesis Awards, based on the exceptional quality of the research and writing. We are proud of the fine work of all of honours thesis students and wish them every success in their future endeavours."

35 of the 98 Honours Psychology Majors graduating June 2011 completed an Honours Thesis.

Applications are not accepted for these awards. Award selection is based on academic performance. A limited number of recipients will be chosen from those enrolled in year 3 and 4 of Honours Psychology (BA or BSc). The home base of registration of the recipients must be the University of Waterloo. Typically the grade cutoff for these awards is in the range of 88-92% for both the overall average and the Psychology average.

Funding for the Psychology Memorial Awards (Walters or Bryden Awards) is possible thanks to the generosity of donors such as faculty, staff, retirees, alumni and friends of the Psychology Department.

Eleven people received awards for outstanding academic achievement in Honours Psychology this year:

Funding for the Currie Scholarship came from the revenue collected from an air hockey machine that was donated to the Campus Centre (now the Student Life Centre) by Mrs. Currie in the 1970s.  

The recipient of the Currie Scholarship was Jeffrey Hughes. Congratulations Jeff and best wishes for continued success!

The competition for the NSERC USRA will hopefully be launched in December 2012. Nominations for the awards will be made by the end of January 2013 or early Feb 2013.

FUTURE PLANS

A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology is a very practical undergraduate degree and the career paths of those graduating will be diverse.  Some will seek employment while others will further their education. See samples below.
