What Services are We Unable to Offer?
Our Centre does not have a full-time counseling staff, psychiatrist or emergency services, and treatment here is conducted under supervision. As such, our Centre cannot provide services when there is a risk of frequent or severe crisis or involvement with the law. We do not provide services for the following:- Assessments for legal issues (e.g., capacity/child custody and access, intellectual fitness)
- Treatment for alcohol and substance abuse/dependence, or treatment for other problems (e.g., anxiety) if the person is currently dependent on alcohol or street drugs
- Psychotic disorders
- Acute eating disorders
- Problems that are associated with a high risk of legal involvement (e.g., violence, criminal behaviour)
- Problems that are associated with frequent and/or severe crises (e.g., actively suicidal and unwilling to contract to not act on thoughts, chronic self-harming behaviour).
Centre Fees
We provide a detailed diagnostic assessment as part of treatment planning. We will provide treatment recommendations, including an estimate of the number of sessions we recommend, after the diagnostic assessment is completed. We do charge a fee for each session of the assessment and psychotherapy, using a sliding fee scale with a maximum hourly rate of $75.00. We ask you to consult an income-based sliding fee schedule and set the fee per session that you feel you can afford. You will then be expected to pay that fee at each session by cash or cheque made out to the University of Waterloo (we cannot accept debit or credit card payments). A receipt will be provided for every payment made, which you can then submit to insurance carriers for reimbursement if your policy covers psychological services. Please note that many individuals have some coverage on their work insurance policies for psychological services. Please also note that we cannot accept payment in advance for therapy.
Many insurance providers offer coverage for psychological services through extended benefits. If you have extended benefits, it is possible that the services we provide here will be covered. The services we provide are bona fide psychological services. However, the actual person delivering the service is not a registered psychologist, but rather is working under the supervision of a registered psychologist. Many insurance providers will cover the psychological services we provide, but some insurance companies have a very strict policy that psychological services can only be covered if they are directly provided by a registered psychologist. You will need to check with your insurance company to determine if they will cover our services. When you do this, please be sure to indicate that you will be receiving a bona fide psychological service, because the therapist is working under the direct supervision of a registered psychologist. The receipt of payment for our services includes the therapist's name, supervisor’s name and College of Psychologists of Ontario registration number, as well as the name and registration number of the Director of the Centre for Mental Health Research.
